The Girl Generation

Grants Mechanism

Why fund
the grassroots?

We believe that grassroots organisations have the local connections, insight, and influence to tackle the social norms that underpin Female Genital Mutilation/Cut (FGM/C).  However, these organisations are often too small to be eligible for grants from a majority of donors. The Girl Generation: Support to Africa-led Movement to End FGM/C created the End FGM/C grassroots grants to respond to these challenges.

We have created a flexible and adaptive small grant mechanisms providing bespoke funding and capacity-building support to each grantee partner.

The vision of the
small grants

The vision of the small grants mechanism is to strengthen the Africa-led movement to end FGM/C by resourcing and supporting those most affected by FGM/C and other forms of gender-based violence against women and girls at the grassroots to lead change within their communities, countries, and globally.

The fund is accessible to civil society, grassroots, and women- and youth-led organisations with a clear girl-led/focussed approach in selected areas in the programme countries which are Kenya, Senegal, Somaliland, and Ethiopia.

The Anticipated Results of the TGG Grants Mechanism in the five-year period include

Enhanced capacity

CBOs, women’s rights networks, and young people individually and collectively, have greater capacity and are better resourced, to implement approaches toward ending FGM/C

Positive social change

Positive social change: grantees apply innovative, girl-centered approaches to social norms change, accountability and communications to end FMG/C

Enhanced sustainability

Community-based organizations will be equipped through capacity building etc., to secure funding beyond the programme to resource their approaches to ending FGM/C

In Kenya, the first cohorts of grantee partners are in Isiolo and Narok Counties, which are focal counties for the programme’s broader community- and county-level interventions.
