The Girl Generation

Our Approach

The grants mechanism

The grants mechanism was designed following consultation with stakeholders in the end FGM/C movement at the grassroots and county level in Isiolo and Narok counties, Kenya. The design was also informed by a review of promising practices in participatory and feminist grant-making. The grants mechanism shifts decision-making power around the allocation of grants to the local level, and the existing end to FGM/C champions.

Our Approach

To achieve this, local grants panels have been constituted from the local community and led locally by people/organisations who know the local end FGM/C ecosystem. The panel includes local representatives from women’s, youth, and girls’ organisations, government, religious leaders, lobby groups, survivors, activists, networks, and representatives from excluded or under-represented groups including people living with disabilities and people living in more remote communities. The panel also consists of people with deep local knowledge of the ending FGM/C and broader Violence against Women and Girls (VAWG) actors in the area.

The first-time grass-roots organisations are prioritised, based on their reputation and existing anti-FGM/C work within the community.
This locally-led selection process aims to ensure that resources flow to those who are known within their local communities for effective work to end FGM/C.

The Girl Generation-Support to Africa-led Movement

The Girl Generation-Support to Africa-led Movement programme grants will be implemented in Kenya in its first year of implementation and thereafter in Senegal, Somaliland, and Ethiopia.

It is important to note that consortium partners of ALM are not eligible for any grants under the Grants Mechanism. Additionally, no grants will be given to Government bodies or sub-agencies.
