Global Advocacy Director

Dr. Leyla Hussein is the Global Advocacy Director for The Girl Generation: Support to the Africa-led Movement to End FGM (TGG-ALM), where she leads the programme’s global advocacy strategy. She works to elevate survivor voices, shape international discourse, and strengthen coordinated action to end FGM, ensuring that advocacy efforts are grounded in lived experience and aligned with Africa-led priorities. In her role, she engages governments, multilateral institutions, civil society, and media to drive accountability and sustained political commitment.

A psychotherapist specialising in supporting survivors of sexual abuse, Leyla brings deep clinical expertise and a survivor-centred lens to her advocacy. She is internationally recognised as a leading expert on FGM and an award-winning campaigner against all forms of violence against women and girls. She founded The Dahlia Project, the UK’s first specialist therapeutic service for FGM survivors, helping to pioneer trauma-informed support in this field.
